Course information

This course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills of basic recombinant DNA technology and molecular biology techniques through theoretical and laboratory practical sessions. The students will be introduced to laboratory ethics, practices and safety. Also the students will be trained in using common Molecular Biology laboratory equipments. This course will provide the opportunity to gain an understanding of nature and use of the “tools” applied routinely by molecular biologists, especially, in the area of recombinant DNA technology. Principles and practical skills of several common techniques such as extraction of nucleic acid materials from various sources, ranging from bacterial cells to animal tissues will be taught to the students. In addition, students will be exposed to the basic genetic manipulation and cloning techniques. The course concludes with a session requiring students to undertake a mini-project that necessitate the use and skills from previous learning units.
