SSF2034 Sem 2 25/26 (UW6312001/G02): Teori Sosial

The first part of this course discusses the nature of theory and traces the emergence and development of a systematic study of society. The discussion on the conceptualization of the "social" and "society" as objects of empirical and systematic enquiry highlights the contribution of early Enlightenment
thinkers such as Charles Montesquieu, Jean Condorcet, and Claude-Henri de Saint-Simon. These discussions culminate in an examination of the contributions of Herbert Spencer and Auguste Comte towards the development of a systematic study of society. The second part of the course focuses on the intellectual biographies, social thoughts, and theories of society of Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Emile Durkheim. The discussion highlights the different perspectives, emphasis, and assumptions that underpin the thoughts of these three theorists. The course concludes with discussions on the influence of these three early social theorists on modern social theories and perspectives on society.

This course introduces students to the concept of deviance and provides a systematic analysis of the nature, causes, and prevention of crime, and the treatment of the criminal. It specifically focuses on various types of deviancy including their social causes and consequences. An overview of the criminal
and juvenile court system as it relates to individual rights will also be discussed. Students will also be exposed to how crime is defined, various categories of crime and delinquency, and how crime and delinquency is measured. In this course students are taught with the major sociological theories of criminal and delinquent behavior. The roles of reformatory services, social workers, government and
non-government agencies and the whole society in responding to these issues will also be discussed, as well as alternative techniques and methods towards rehabilitation. Social work values, ethics and interventions in dealing with crime will also be addressed.

STB2163 Sem 2 25/26: Recombinant DNA Technology (G1/G2/G3)

This course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills of basic recombinant DNA technology and molecular biology techniques through theoretical and laboratory practical sessions. The students will be introduced to laboratory ethics, practices and safety. Also the students will be trained in using common Molecular Biology laboratory equipments. This course will provide the opportunity to gain an understanding of nature and use of the “tools” applied routinely by molecular biologists, especially, in the area of recombinant DNA technology. Principles and practical skills of several common techniques such as extraction of nucleic acid materials from various sources, ranging from bacterial cells to animal tissues will be taught to the students. In addition, students will be exposed to the basic genetic manipulation and cloning techniques. The course concludes with a session requiring students to undertake a mini-project that necessitate the use and skills from previous learning units.

Environmental impact assessment is a mandatory procedure for any development that falls under prescribed activities stated in Environmental Quality Act 1974 and Natural Resource Environment Ordinance 1995. This course is specifically designed for graduating students to understand some basic knowledge on the guidelines of EIA, role of EIA, methods of auditing, inventory, and EIA studies of various disciplines; writing term of reference (TOR) or proposal for the project proponent, EIA report, predicting impact and mitigating measures. Students will also be taught on the procedures used by authorities to review EIA reports. In addition, students will also be exposed to current environmental problems and government policies concerning environmental protection.

STT2463 Sem 2 25/26: Environmental and Natural Resource Economics

This course is intended to provide students with a sound knowledge of environmental management and resource economics in the Third World. The course will cover three components, which are concepts in the environmental management and resource economics, environmental economics and resource management. Topics covered are market failures, renewable and non-renewable resources; state, market and society; poverty, environment and development; patterns of growth and environmental pressure; and tools in renewal resource management, air and water pollution and valuation, regulatory instruments, forest management and timber rents, and natural resource accounting.

STT3503 Sem 2 25/26: Forest Science and Management

This course focuses on two important aspects of forestry: forest science and forest management. Principles of forest science and processes associated with natural and man-made tree stands will be explored, e.g. forest ecology, forest ecosystem, stand dynamics, and stand productivity. Basic management concepts and various forest management practices will be addressed, e.g., forest mensuration and inventory, sustainable management of forests for various products and services, and certification. Current forestry issues locally and internationally will be discussed, e.g., forest management certification and legality, planted forests, and roles of forests in global warming and water conservation.
