STF3033 Sem 2 25/26: Environmental Impact Assessment (G5) - Dr Mugunthan Perumal

Environmental impact assessment is a mandatory procedure for any development that falls under prescribed activities stated in Environmental Quality Act 1974 and Natural Resource Environment Ordinance 1995. This course is specifically designed for graduating students to understand some basic knowledge on the guidelines of EIA, role of EIA, methods of auditing, inventory, and EIA studies of various disciplines; writing term of reference (TOR) or proposal for the project proponent, EIA report, predicting impact and mitigating measures. Students will also be taught on the procedures used by authorities to review EIA reports. In addition, students will also be exposed to current environmental problems and government policies concerning environmental protection.

STT2463 Sem 2 25/26: Environmental and Natural Resource Economics

This course is intended to provide students with a sound knowledge of environmental management and resource economics in the Third World. The course will cover three components, which are concepts in the environmental management and resource economics, environmental economics and resource management. Topics covered are market failures, renewable and non-renewable resources; state, market and society; poverty, environment and development; patterns of growth and environmental pressure; and tools in renewal resource management, air and water pollution and valuation, regulatory instruments, forest management and timber rents, and natural resource accounting.

STT3503 Sem 2 25/26: Forest Science and Management

This course focuses on two important aspects of forestry: forest science and forest management. Principles of forest science and processes associated with natural and man-made tree stands will be explored, e.g. forest ecology, forest ecosystem, stand dynamics, and stand productivity. Basic management concepts and various forest management practices will be addressed, e.g., forest mensuration and inventory, sustainable management of forests for various products and services, and certification. Current forestry issues locally and internationally will be discussed, e.g., forest management certification and legality, planted forests, and roles of forests in global warming and water conservation.
